Video: Sailing

I always loved this song. πŸ™‚ I’m going sailing this weekend so I thought this would be a good start. πŸ˜‰

I remember when this song first came out. I was a teenager, still living in Florida. I was living on the beach and sailing my little sea snark just about every day.

My life was about to change in a big way. I went off on the adventure of my life on the sailing ships of the Oceanics School. We ALL loved this song there! Rod Stewart was SO hot!!

“Sailing”

I am sailing, I am sailing,

home again ‘cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.I am flying, I am flying,
like a bird ‘cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
to be with you, to be free.

Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro’ the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro’ the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again ‘cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free,
Oh Lord.

PS- does anybody know why he’s singing about sailing while he’s cruising around on a power vessel??? πŸ˜‰

  1. I definitely agree about the ‘hotness’ and I like the song too, one of his best maybe,, along with Maggie. No idea about the power vessel, maybe it fitted his image better.

  2. Not only is he cruising around in a power vessel, he doesn’t seem too comfortable doing it. A few points in the video I thought he was going to turn around and heave… He did let go of the railing once. OK, enough making fun of Rod, I do like the song. That being said, of sailing songs from that era I preferred “Come Sail Away”. I was in the first class ever of a new Junior High named “Sailor Way” and we all thought Styxx wrote the song just for us. It was my class’ theme song up to and including naming our senior prom “Come Sail Away” and using it as the theme song for our graduation.

    • That’s a really cool story Trent. Did your school go sailing?
My high school did. Our graduation song was “Amazing Grace”. I remember all of us dressed in our school t-shirts, jeans and foul weather gear, standing along the waterfront in Copenhagen with the ship (Phoenix) behind us, singing that song.
Our other favorite song was “What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor” (fitted us much better). πŸ˜‰

Good observation about Rod, I was thinking the same kind of thoughts, he should have really gone on a sailboat, he might have enjoyed himself more.

      • I grew up in a small boating town on the shore of Lake Erie. The claim at the time was we had the largest small boat harbor on the Great Lakes, but I never believed it. The Great Lakes Museum was/is in town. So a lot of kids in my school sailed or boated, but there was no school sanctioned boat club. Of course if there were I think “Drunken Sailor” would be appropriate.
