Work

Finally! I’m going to work tomorrow! 🙂

It’s only a temp job. Maybe not even a week. But it’s the first real job I’ve had since I went as AB on that delivery job down to Colombia last August.

I’ll be going out as 3rd mate/JDPO (junior dynamic positioning officer) just to relieve someone who had to leave unexpectedly.

I hope, really really hope this is the start of something good!

    • I sure do hope so Skipah!
It’s for a company I worked for before. They know me already, so if they have an opening then maybe they will use me again.
The problem is that since the price of oil dropped like a rock, companies have laid off 1000’s of people. No one is leaving if they can help it. Not even for Christmas vacations or any other reason beyond a major emergency. There is not nearly enough work for all of us who have been laid off and there won’t be until the price of oil goes back up and the majors start drilling again (offshore).
Problem with that is that the ONSHORE drillers CAN make money with oil at $50/bbl (and even lower) and THEY are drilling like it’s going out of style. That is making OPEC very unhappy and so there’s a real good chance the price will drop again.
The longer it stays under $65/bbl, the longer we will have to wait to go back to work. Most people who were working offshore will be forced out, won’t be ABLE to return if/when things do turn around.
It’s a bad situation and the laws re: certifications/licensing (in order to work) make it damn near impossible to find work if you’ve been out of work for more than a few months.
I’m very lucky right now that this job is an emergency situation, otherwise they would have said I was not qualified (because my Bahamas license expired with my US license in December- I renewed my US license but was not able to renew my Bahamas license without a company sponsoring me, this company is doing that because they really, really need someone immediately). So I got a lucky break.
