S is for Spike- #AtoZChallenge

S” is for Spike. Today, I’m posting about the letter S for both the A to Z Challenge and the Daily Post. I love it when I can do double duty here. 😉

It’s easy to come up with S words, not so easy to come up with things to say about “spike”. Then I remembered those beautiful doors from my last vacation. Stone Town, Zanzibar has the most ornately carved doors. Many of them have spikes, “to keep out the elephants.”

Norm’s Thursday Doors

I haven’t done this one lately, but Norm and his followers always have some great looking doors to share. Here’s one of mine. 🙂

I took the photo on a recent trip to Tanzania. I went for a photo safari with Great Escape Publishing. I’ve always wanted to go on a safari and GEP can’t be beat for the photography. I came early and spent a couple of weeks in Turkey. I stayed after and spent about a week in Zanzibar. I took this photo of a door in Stone Town. They had a lot of really beautiful doors there. 🙂

Check out the link for more of Norm’s Doors. 🙂

Color Your World: 21 Raw Sienna

The color of the day for Jennifer’s Color Your World challenge is ‘raw sienna‘. Here’s the reference.

I had a hard time coming up with a match for yesterday’s color. Today was almost as hard. I think I found a good match with this old door from Zanzibar. It actually has a lot of different colors in it, lots of different shades of brown.

These beautiful carved doors are all over Stone Town, the ancient capital of Zanzibar. I really enjoyed myself just wandering around the narrow, crooked streets. Most of them weren’t wide enough for cars, so I could stop and take all the pictures I wanted. 🙂 Isn’t it gorgeous? Look at the detailed carving all around it. It all has meaning. I was told that the studs were to keep the elephants out. 😉

Norms Thursday Doors

I’m still here in Nicaragua, but leaving tonight. I should be back home in Texas by morning.

I figured I’d add another pretty Nicaraguan one to Norms Thursday Door challenge this week. They do have a lot of very nice ones around down here.

I really liked the carvings of the toucans on these doors. These were in Granada.

Norms Thursday Doors

I like to try to get into these challenges when I can. I’m late his week since it’s really horrible. I moved my blog and it’s been hard as hell to do ANYTHING with it since then. It’s worse than pulling teeth! It looks like hell and I’ve been traveling so haven’t really had time to deal with it.

Anyway, I did take some nice pictures of doors and will see if this works for Norms Thursday Doors. He has some really nice pictures this week. 🙂

Here’s mine for the week. I took this right around the corner. It’s a house on Atravesada Street in Granada Nicaragua. They have some really beautiful colonial buildings (and doors) here.

What’s With the Doors Lately?

I found out about Norms Thursday Doors a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been trying to join in when I can. Now, this morning I got this challenge from the Daily Post: Doors. I decided to jump in since I’ve rounded up my photos already for Norm. Here are a few from my collection. 😉

So, just what is it with the doors already?

Norms Thursday Doors

Norm does a photo challenge on ‘doors‘ every Thursday. I like to get into these things when I can. Here’s a photo I took while wandering around Seoul Korea with the Travel Writing group last spring. I walked all around town for hours. It’s a very safe and interesting place, the people are friendly and easy to talk to. They’re very  happy to practice their English with you! 🙂

Here’s a pretty blue door. I took this picture last year while I was in Aberdeen for the Freefall Lifeboat Course. It was in an area of town called Footdee, where they moved all the fishermen years ago. This picture is of one of the fishermen’s sheds, where they work on their nets, etc.

Travel Theme: Doorways

I stumbled upon the “Where’s My Backpack?” blog and Travel Theme: Doorways challenge while I was checking my reader today. I figured I’d join in…

Those first couple (of neighbors, sitting in their doorways) were from Thailand, up in the hills North of Chiang Mai. The next bunch are from Aberdeen, Scotland. I had to go take the course for Freefall Lifeboat before they would let me go out on my new job.

And I just had to throw something nautical in the mix. 🙂 This is a photo of the interior of the boat we were practicing with all week.
