Here’s another song for my Songs of the Sea series. It’s a little different from the kind of thin I usually listen to. I only found it cause I was messing around online looking for music for the series. I’m not sure why, but I like it. 😉
Deep Wide Ocean- The Jezabels
What a simple want To be free of god A finger on your own creation
Queen told me to eat of kerosene I must be real for the nation
Shortie, go by Should you ever touch the sky There’s no need to cry “deep wide ocean” Any more now
You should know the score Of my hidden war I’m fighting on But it’s all about you
I follow in the space you travelled Your trail of heart unravels I pass the clearing you made for when happiness was Always
So carry the sign Just a thimble in your eye And if they should ask How you knew me…
Oh Shortie, you won Something deeper has begun There’s no need to cry deep wide ocean
You’re toeing a line Something real or something divine There’s no need to choose Can be both of them
To be right here, over there Think and feel softest hair You remind me of something yet to be lived Oh, baby, I can’t complain For I love to watch you play No, I could not contain it for my eyes
And a story Of many graces you told me And forever I will love you For all time
Here I go yo, Rockin’ solo
I’ll be around if you’re low, though Call me Anna, Poly-anna
Here’s a good song for a Sunday. Another one of my Songs of the Sea series. I’m an atheist, so I don’t go along with all the religious stuff in this song. I’ll start believing in god if/when I see some real evidence. I don’t have faith, will never have faith, I want PROOF. Personally I think religion is one of the worst things people have ever invented and we’d all be a lot better off without it. But the music and the singing is very beautiful anyway.
Religion can ‘inspire’ a lot of people.
Just like so many churches are stunningly beautiful. They took the best efforts of thousands of men over decades to build. They cost millions of dollars.
All for nothing really. An invisible, (almost certainly imaginary), being. All that artwork is still beautiful, even if it was done for nothing but hope and a promise.
Personally, I think it’s really sad. That so much effort is spent on such things, when it could have been used to make things so much better for real people, right here and now. People spend so much effort fixing things for ‘the next life’ instead of fixing THIS one. I think it’s sad.
Even so, I still do appreciate the beauty that’s created.
“Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”
You call me out upon the waters The great unknown where feet may fail And there I find You in the mystery In oceans deep My faith will stand
And I will call upon Your name And keep my eyes above the waves When oceans rise My soul will rest in Your embrace For I am Yours and You are mine
Your grace abounds in deepest waters Your sovereign hand Will be my guide Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me You’ve never failed and You won’t start now
So I will call upon Your name And keep my eyes above the waves When oceans rise My soul will rest in Your embrace For I am Yours and You are mine
[6x] Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders Let me walk upon the waters Wherever You would call me Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander And my faith will be made stronger In the presence of my Savior
Oh, Jesus, you’re my God!
I will call upon Your name Keep my eyes above the waves My soul will rest in Your embrace I am Yours and You are mine
Here’s a classic. The Beach Boys singing “Sail On Sailor”. Read the lyrics for a not so nice version of time spent at sea. Good or bad out there, I still love it! 🙂
“Sail On Sailor”
I sailed an ocean, unsettled ocean Through restful waters and deep commotion Often frightened, unenlightened Sail on, sail on sailor
I wrest the waters, fight Neptune’s waters Sail through the sorrows of life’s marauders Unrepenting, often empty Sail on, sail on sailor
Caught like a sewer rat alone but I sail Bought like a crust of bread, but oh do I wail
Seldom stumble, never crumble Try to tumble, life’s a rumble Feel the stinging I’ve been given Never ending, unrelenting Heartbreak searing, always fearing Never caring, persevering Sail on, sail on, sailor
I work the seaways, the gale-swept seaways Past shipwrecked daughters of wicked waters Uninspired, drenched and tired Wail on, wail on, sailor
Always needing, even bleeding Never feeding all my feelings Damn the thunder, must I blunder There’s no wonder all I’m under Stop the crying and the lying And the sighing and my dying
Sail on, sail on sailor Sail on, sail on sailor Sail on, sail on sailor Sail on, sail on sailor Sail on, sail on sailor Sail on, sail on sailor Sail on, sail on sailor
I got back from Phoenix on Sunday. On the way, I stopped off at the Renaissance Festival (Faire). I’ve been trying to go for a couple of weeks, but it has been raining every weekend. It’s not really much fun anymore to wander around in the rain.
This Sunday was finally nice. The weather was gorgeous! Sunny and cool. 🙂
So I went straight from the airport up to the Fair. Looks like everybody else in Texas had the same plans!
The traffic was horrible! It took me over 2 hours just to get from Magnolia to the festival grounds. That’s only about 6-7 miles!
Once I finally got there, I was happy to wander around all day. There was plenty to do. Watch the jugglers, jousting, fools, belly dancers, magicians. Listen to some really cool music, I really liked the Scottish group “Tartanic”. They put on a fantastic show!
There was all kinds of food to sample, set up in ‘villages’: Greek, Italian, Polish, Mexican, etc along with the usual fair foods (turkey legs, cheesecake on a stick, corn on the cob, gyros, sausage on a stick, funnel cakes, etc).
There were interesting shops for such necessities as armor, magical supplies, leather, candles, writing instruments, weaponry, jewelry, hats and clothing (mostly to fit the theme).
I loved seeing all the creative costumes. Some of the barbarians were really scary. Some of the costumes were just plain weird. Some of the outfits were just gorgeous. Some ladies I talked with told me they spent thousands of dollars on their costumes!
I really loved some of the clothes, I even went to try on a few. I couldn’t find a corset that fit. That’s probably a good thing, they were NOT cheap!
trying on corsets
Besides, when would I ever wear something like that other than Halloween? Or maybe for the St Patricks Day festivities here at Surfside?
I didn’t get home til after midnight. Slept late Monday and didn’t get much done. More on the Festival later, once I get caught up. Lots to tell. 🙂
Here’s another for my Songs of the Sea series. I’m not really sure what to say about this one. Is it electronica? It’s not the kind of thing I usually listen to, but I really liked the video. Some of those guys really looked like they were getting into the groove. 😉
I haven’t been posting this series for the last couple of weeks. It’s hard to find time to look around for the music videos while I’m offshore. The internet is usually not the best, we don’t have enough bandwidth and they don’t want us looking at videos. I found this one in my stored posts. It’s a bit different from the kind of stuff I usually listen to. Let me know how you like it. 🙂
Ode to a Sailor- Rachel Sage
I’ve been sitting on the ground Much to everyone’s surprise People say I’m getting dirty But I would rather kiss the soil Than be crippled by disguise Better down to earth than pretty
In the ash I see passion In the dust I see trust I will turn this ship around And if everything crashes I will burn if I must I will turn this ship around
I’ve been swimming in your sky Waiting for the tide to turn To something beautiful and true And you’ve been swallowing my life From a distance you have earned Every right to know I feel you.
In the ash I see passion In the dust I see trust I will turn this ship around Do you think I’m old fashioned ‘Cause I miss you this much I will turn this ship around
I’ve been buried in the sand Waiting for the sun to beat Down upon my back like lava And I’ve been hoping for your hands To caress my soul to sleep Fill me up with your kabbalah
In the ash I see passion In the dust I see trust I will turn this ship around And if everything crashes I will burn if I must I will turn this ship around
My recent post (re-blogged from Indian Rocks Bridge) about climbing aloft on the Sorlandet got me thinking of those beautiful square riggers. I found this video yesterday. I love the pictures! Such beautiful ships!! It’s a traditional song but has recently been ‘discovered’ (at least according to some of the musical forums). Here’s a shanty to listen to the next time you’re getting underway. 😉
Farewell Shanty
It’s time to go now Haul away your anchor (x2) ‘Tis our sailing time
Get some sail upon her Haul away your halyards (x2) ‘Tis our sailing time
Get her on her course now Haul away your foresheets (x2) ‘Tis our sailing time
Waves are surging under Haul away down-channel (x2) On the evening tide
When my days are over Haul away for Heaven (x2) God be by my side (x2)
PS- the Statsraad Lehmkuhl is another of the ships the Oceanics School chartered for our sailtraining. I missed this one too. 🙁 I got to sail the Ariadne and the brigantine Phoenix. They were all beautiful ships but not quite the same experience as to sail a full rigged ship.
Maybe I’ll do a couple of posts explaining the different ship types (sail plans). Would you like that? In the meantime, here’s a link to a site one of my classmates put online about our school. If you look closely, you can see me in some of the photos. Yeah, I still look pretty much the same. 🙂
Here’s a photo I took at the fair last year. I think it’s a good one for this challenge (Motion) from the Daily Post. I always try to go when I’m home from the ship. I don’t usually go on the rides anymore, but I love to see all the people wandering around, listen to the music, and pig out on the junk food! 😉
Here’s a photo I took in New Orleans. I think it’s a good one for this challenge (Motion) from the Daily Post. I loved watching this couple dance and listen to the band play in the street. New Orleans is really great for this kind of thing. 🙂
It’s not really blurry, but I hope you can get the idea of motion anyway. The couple was really dancing up a storm (swing, jitterbug, etc.), the musicians were all tapping their toes and swaying to the music and everyone was having a great time.
I didn’t think to buy a CD from this band, I wish I remembered their name. But I did get one from another one that was playing further up the street. Here’s a post I did about that one. Check it out, the music’s worth a listen. 😉
I was reading an email this morning about education. It was really more about the disadvantages of “public” schools (government schools).
This video was in the email. I don’t usually listen to rap music. I’ve never heard of this guy, Dave. Or his Boyinaband. I did check it out today. Just because I finally have some spare time at home and because of the recommendation in the email from TDV.
I think Dave makes a LOT of good points! No, I don’t think school should completely eliminate ALL the classics. But I DO think they spend a lot of time on things that nobody is EVER going to use.
OK, if you’re going to be an engineer or scientist, (or math teacher) then I’m sure you’ll be using quadratic equations. For pretty much everybody else, you’ll be fine if you ace geometry (or even just basic arithmetic) and skip algebra completely.
Same goes for all the other subjects: Science, English, History, Civics, etc.
Why don’t we just give all our kids a great background in those basic subjects. Up to about 4th grade, say. They OUGHT to be able to ace it by then. And if they’re some of the few that can’t, then DON’T let them hold back the ones that can do the work! Put the slow ones in a special remedial class and stop with all the political correctness that is ruining everything for everybody! Get some discipline back in the classrooms so the kids that want to learn, can learn. Concentrate on giving ALL of them a good foundation: “readin’, writin’, ‘rithmatic!” Spend the rest of the time up til High School building on those foundations with more intensive studies.
Then, after that, let the kids and their parents chose a more applicable education. Surely by High School, all involved ought to have a good idea of what they want to do with their lives. Let them opt out of todays’ standard “college prep” and take something more practical if they want to (technical or trade track).
I agree with the premise that kids are naturally curious and WILL learn what interests them. If you show them how a subject will be relevant to them, then they’re a lot more likely to take an interest.
In my own personal experience, I was very lucky to have the chance to leave the ‘public’ school system before it totally destroyed my chance of a good education. I was one of those students who always aced the tests, etc. I made straight A’s without even trying. By the time I got to High School, I had already started skipping school. Just because it was SO DAMNED BORING!
I decided I had much better things to do with my time than to take Algebra yet again! I had been taking that class (earning straight A’s) since 4th grade! No one could/would explain to me why I should waste even more of my time in that class. Nor could they say why there were no options!
People seem to think that the ONLY place you can learn something is in ‘school’. I disagree!! I’ve learned a hell of a lot more on my own, then I ever did in school.
Looked to me then (and it looks to me now), like we have a one track system. Dumb down the smart kids (and the middle of the road kids). Let the slow kids set the pace of the class. IMHO, that is a road to disaster! And just look at how bad the results are compared to a century ago! Here’s a link to an 8th grade exam from 1912. Could YOU pass it?
(I can’t. I have 2 degrees- one of them is in math).
BUT; if kids could pass it then, they COULD be taught to pass it NOW.
Now we graduate kids from High School that can’t even READ! Or do even BASIC math! I know, because I used to tutor a hell of a lot of them when they got into college. And WHY are they even allowed into college if they can’t ALREADY read, write and do math???
We really need to stop spending so much time, money and other resources on making sure (or trying to) that everybody can go to college. Somehow we’ve managed to make a college degree a ‘necessity’.
MAYBE if we got back to where a high school diploma actually meant something, like a graduate really knew how to read, basic math, basic all around education and HOW TO THINK, then a business would once again be able to trust that the person they’re interviewing for a job could learn the skills to do the job without needing a complete education after they got hired! Maybe then you wouldn’t ‘need’ a college degree to get a ‘good job’.
After all, one of the main reasons we send kids to school is so that they can ‘get a job’. Hopefully, a job that will allow them a decent standard of living. A “good job”. I don’t see why we should FORCE kids to stay in school if that’s all they’re looking for.
The other reason we send kids to school is to give them a real education. To learn how to live their lives. I think we are failing BADLY in this task. I think we should teach these lessons from the earliest opportunity and all the way up through High School.
Yes! Like Dave says; teach them about money, currency, and where it comes from! Teach them about finances, about how the stock markets work, about banking, about budgeting, about debt and interest, about how to balance a checkbook, about how to run a household.
Teach them about how to shop for groceries, about nutrition and healthy eating, about how to cook. Teach them how to grow a garden. Teach them about their bodies and how to stay healthy (and how NOT to become parents!), and how to raise a family IF you want to.
Teach them about the society they live in (and the worldwide situation), about how they are part of the community, about their rights and responsibilities. About politics and voting and corruption and how the system REALLY works! About history and how all this came about.
Teach them about the rest of the world: Geography, world events and how they relate to history and how it affects them, now. Languages, to help them get by in a changing world. Natural science and environmental studies, so they can understand how the environment they live in affects them and is (or is not) effected by them. Throw some travel in the mix, it’s a GREAT way to teach many different subjects!
Teach them about science (and math), basic principles and how it is relevant to them!
Most important, teach them how to THINK!!
NOT just how to regurgitate facts, or to pass the next test. Teach them how to go about learning about a subject. Teach them how to find the information they need to solve a problem or to answer any questions they may have. How to use logic and how to get past all the advertising and propaganda we all have to deal with constantly.
I think learning HOW to learn is the most important thing we can teach. But I don’t see much of that going on in schools anymore. 🙁
Listen to the lyrics to the song above, do you agree or disagree with Dave?
For some reason this song has been running through my head for the last couple of days. “On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson is a classic country song by a classic country singer (he’s from Texas). At 81, he’s still going strong. 🙂
PS- If you want to sing along, the lyrics are playing along at the bottom of the video. 😉
Here’s some nice, mellow music to start the new year. It’s an instrumental by Songs of Water. I don’t usually listen to this kind of thing. I really like the stories they tell in some songs. I prefer songs with someone singing words I understand- which eliminates most rap songs and opera. 😉
Another classic sailing song. No, it’s not really about the sea, but it’s close enough for me. It’s about hanging out on the beach, chillin’ out in some tropical place, drinking. margaritas and enjoying life. My kind of song! 🙂
Yeah! Margaritas!!
Margaritaville- Jimmy Buffett
Nibbling on sponge cake, watching the sun bake, All of those tourists covered with oil, Strumming my six string, on my front porch swing, Smell those shrimp, they’re beginning to boil.
Wasting away again in Margaritaville, Searching for my lost shaker of salt, Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, But I know it’s nobody’s fault.
Don’t know the reason that I stayed here all season, With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo, But it’s a real beauty, a Mexican cutie, How it got here I haven’t a clue.
Wasting away again in Margaritaville, Searching for my lost shaker of salt, Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, Now I think, hell it could be my fault.
Blew out my flip flop, stepped on a poptop Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home, But there’s booze in the blender, And soon it will render, That frozen concoction that helps me hang on.
Wasting away again in Margaritaville, Searching for my lost shaker of salt, Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, But I know, it’s my own damn fault.
Yes, some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, And I know it’s my own damn fault.
“Good Ship Venus“, also known as “Friggin’ in the Riggin'” is a little nasty, so if you’re easily offended, you might want to pass on this one. But it’s one of my favorite drinking songs.
I didn’t know this til I looked up the lyrics to post here, but this song was done by the Sex Pistols and actually got to #3 on the charts in the UK. Anthrax also did a version. Somehow, I don’t think it would make the charts here in the US (probably would be censored- love that freedom we have so much of here).
Good Ship Venus- Loudon Wainwright
We sailed upon the good ship Venus By Christ you should have seen us The figurehead was a whore in bed The mast an upright penis
The captain’s name was Lugger By Christ he was a bugger He wasn’t fit to shovel shit From one ship to another
And the second mate was Andy By Christ he had a dandy Till they crushed his cock on a jagged rock For cumming in the brandy
The third mate’s name was Morgan By God he was a gorgon From half past eight he played till late Upon the captain’s organ
The captain’s wife was Mabel And by God was she able The crew, those shits, nailed her tits Right to the mess room table
The captain’s daughter Charlotte Was born and bred a harlot Her thighs at night were lily white By morning they were scarlet
The cabin boy was Kipper By Christ he was a nipper He stuffed his ass with broken glass And circumcised the skipper
The captain’s lovely daughter Liked swimming in the water Delighted squeals came when some eels Found her sexual quarters
The cook his name was Freeman And he was a dirty demon And he fed the crew on menstrual stew And hymens fried in semen
And the ship’s dog was called Rover And we turned the poor thing over And ground and ground that faithful hound From Teneriff to Dover
When we reached our station Through skillful navigation The ship got sunk in a wave of spunk From too much fornication
On the good ship Venus By Christ you should have seen us The figurehead was a whore in bed Sucking a dead man’s penis
At first I thought it said movement, but then I saw it was really moment, but the assignment (Day 13) is still to play around with blur and movement. I think there are a lot of ways to interpret this one. 🙂
I’m still stuck in class all day and it’s way too cold out here for me to go out (and I have no transportation either), so I’ve been picking out old photos to try and illustrate the themes for the challenges.
Here’s a photo I took in New Orleans last winter.

Here’s another song related to the sea for my Songs of the Sea series. It’s an old ballad about a rich girl who falls in love with a poor sailor. She ships off with him for a while and when she finally comes home, her father relents and allows her to marry her true love. 🙂
ANDREA CORR CAROLINE AND HER YOUNG SAILOR BOLD LYRICS
There lived a rich Nobleman’s daughter
Caroline is her name we are been told One day from her drawing room window She admired a young sailor bold She cried – I’m a Nobleman’s daughter My income’s five thousand in gold I forsake both my father and mother And I’ll marry young sailor bold Says William- Fair lady remember Your parents you are bound to mind In sailors there is no dependence For they leave their true lovers behind And she says – There’s no one could prevent me One moment to alter my mind In the ships I’ll be off with my true love He never will leave me behind Three years and a half on the ocean And she always proved loyal and true Her duty she did like a sailor Dressed up in her jacket of blue When at last they arrived back in England Straightway to her father she went Oh father dear father forgive me Deprive me forever of gold Just grant me one favor I ask you To marry a young sailor bold Her father looked upon young William And love and in sweet unity If I be spared till tomorrow It’s married this couple shall be
Halloween is my favorite holiday (after St Patricks Day). Since I’ll be working (again) this year on Halloween, I won’t be able to enjoy any of my favorite wine (or candy). 🙁
I never was much of a wine snob. I like sweet wine but I don’t know enough about different wines to drink it much anymore. I don’t like to buy a bottle to try it, only to get home, open it up and find out I hate it and just wind up dumping the whole thing down the drain.
I hate to waste good food or drinks. I have a bottle of wine in my fridge that’s been in there for a year now. Maybe I’ll get around to drinking it soon. Who knows what it tastes like at this point?
My favorite wine (when I was drinking a lot of it) was Cello Lambrusco. I could always get that kind since that was what my dad drank around the house. It came in gallon jugs. 🙂
If he was still alive, my dad would probably be charged and heavily fined now for “contributing to the delinquency of a minor” for allowing me to have a glass of wine every now and again, but my grandmother was Italian and wine with meals was a given. 🙂
My other available choices back then were MD 20/20, Night Train, Ripple or Thunderbird (all affectionately known as ‘Bum wines”). 🙂
I wasn’t really a bum at that point (I was still in school), but my grandmother used to get on my case all the time about hanging around with a lot of them. 😉
Well, yeah, I did. But what’s wrong with that?
How else to get your booze supply when you’re underage in the USA?
Talking Thunderbird Blues- Townes Van Zandt
Among the strangest things I ever heard Was when a friend of mine said “man, let’s get some thunderbird” I said “what’s that? ” he just started to grin Slobbered on his shirt, his eyes got dim He said “you got fifty-nine cents? “
I said “yeah, I got a dollar, but don’t be a smart-aleck I ain’t gonna spend it on no indian relic” And he said “thunderbird’s not an old indian trinket, It’s a wine, man, you take it home and drink it.” I said “it sure don’t sound like wine to me” And he said he’d bet me the change from my dollar
We hustled on down to the nearest u-tate-um The guy wanted my id, I whipped her out and showed him He got a green bottle from the freezing vault My friend started doing backward somersaults Through the cottage cheese
Took it back to his house, started drinkin’ Pretty soon I set in to thinkin’ “man, this thunderbird tastes yummy, yummy, yummy And I know it’s doing good things to my tummy, tum…, t…” It’s so you reason when your on that crap
Got a few more bottles, chugged them down I pulled myself up off the ground Decided I go see my dearest sweet wife Who met me at the door with a carving knife Said “get them damn grape peel from between your teeth.”
I could see we’re gonna have a little misunderstanding I said “dear, I better get in touch with you later” She said “forget it, man, you’re never touchin’ me again!”
Now I’ve seen the light and heard the word And I’m staying away from that ol’ dirty thunderbird A message come from heaven radiant, and fine, All I drink now is communion wine Six days a week
Sittin’ in the morning sun I’ll be sittin’ when the evening comes Watching the ships roll in Then I watch them roll away again, yeah I’m sittin’ on the dock of the bay Watchin’ the tide roll away, ooh I’m just sittin’ on the dock of the bay Wastin’ timeI left my home in Georgia Headed for the Frisco Bay Cuz I’ve had nothing to live for And look like nothing’s gonna come my way
So, I’m just gon’ sit on the dock of the bay Watchin’ the tide roll away, ooh I’m sittin’ on the dock of the bay Wastin’ time
Looks like nothing’s gonna change Everything still remains the same I can’t do what ten people tell me to do So I guess I’ll remain the same, listen
Sittin’ here resting my bones And this loneliness won’t leave me alone, listen Two thousand miles I roam Just to make this dock my home, now
I’m just gon’ sit at the dock of a bay Watchin’ the tide roll away, ooh Sittin’ on the dock of the bay Wastin’ time
I originally posted this last year, right about this time. At that point I had never been to Africa. I didn’t know I would get to come to work in Africa. I had high hopes for how things would be working here.
I recently (July 2014) started working out of Angola and things here are not at all as easy going as I had hoped after watching the video.
The work is pretty much the same as in the Gulf of Mexico. Even the paper work is the same. It looks like the USA has infected the entire world with its CYA culture. 🙁
Lawyers and insurance companies have done a pretty damn good job of ruining the world!
Working in Africa is one of the most dangerous places in the world for working seafarers. At least these guys still have a sense of humor. 🙂
It’s nice to see there are some places in the world where we can still enjoy doing our jobs. It’s encouraging to think that there is still some hope to find a shipboard job where its not all about the ISM, IMO, SMS, USCG, BSEE, and all the other alphabet soup that organizes our every move.
In the USA, the lawyers and accountants have taken all the fun out of the job. We would NEVER be allowed to do something like this here anymore. I see ‘no horseplay’ posted on almost every vessel now and the companies here do take that very seriously.
Someone would be hounding these guys about their JSA, and where the heck is their PPE? Gloves, safety glasses (with side shields), steel toes, long sleeved fire-resistant clothing, ear plugs, hardhats, etc. No one is allowed out the door here without all that on! 🙁
And OMG!!! He had a KNIFE! Not an alternative cutting device! He would be fired immediately! Sailors without knives are like birds without feathers. A necessary part of our garb has been stripped away from us. A safety item has been declared ‘too risky’ for us to use!! What total BS!!
No wonder most sailors who have been anywhere other than the USA are so desperate to get away from this place again and will work pretty much ANYWHERE else. Personally, I am willing to take quite a pay cut in order to enjoy my job again. Too bad that’s what they’ve done to this place. 🙁
Hey, anybody over there need a good DPO??? I’m available any time. 😉
Up for a challenge? Here’s another entry for this weeks challenge from the Daily Post. The challenge is to illustrate the idea of ‘Dreamy’. Here’s what they have to say about it…
This week, we’d like to see an image that looks dreamy to you. A photo of a place you often visit in dreams. A snapshot of your dreamy boy- or girlfriend. A scene that looks a bit out-of-this world. Take us on a flight of fancy!
I already posted one photo from my trip to Las Vegas, but it’s such a dreamy kind of place. I thought about it and came up with some more ideas.
I posted another one about an Elvis impersonator who was performing right outside my hotel. Lots of women thought Elvis was pretty ‘dreamy’. Then I posted some dreamy girls for the guys. 🙂
Las Vegas really is a dreamy kind of place. I think it’s one of those places that’s built on dreams. All kinds of dreams going on there. People go there dreaming to hit the jackpot and get rich. They go there hoping to hit it big and make a name for themselves as a singer or a dancer or chef or…
I love to hang out in old downtown. It’s not like the Strip (which is interesting in a different way), where things are spread out and isolated. Every casino has it’s own attractions and you pretty much stick to one since it’s a pain to move on to the next.
Downtown is different. Everything is close together. There’s lots to do (Mob Museum, Container Park, Neon Museum), and all kinds of things going on. Fremont Street is the hub of all the action. There are at least a dozen different casinos all within easy walking distance. It’s easy to hit one for drinks, another to eat, try the poker at one, blackjack at another…
Fremont Street is really pretty cool. They have a light show projected on a huge blocks-long overhead screen. You can go zip-lining right over the top of all the crowds. There are artists at work, lots of little shops along the street. They have all kinds of bands and performers scheduled to play on the various stages. And then there are all the unscheduled ‘performers’. People who just like to come out and play. 🙂
Up for a challenge? Here’s another entry for this weeks challenge from the Daily Post. The challenge is to illustrate the idea of ‘Dreamy’. Here’s what they have to say about it…

Since I posted a dreamy guy for the ladies, I thought I’d post some dreamy girls for the guys. 🙂
These ladies (‘Hotties’ was the name of their group) were also on stage singing and dancing. I love to watch people dance! These Hotties put on a really great show. They even got some audience participation. A couple of ladies volunteered to be in a ‘dance-off’ up on stage (no- they did not have those nice costumes or high heels!). The lady from France won. The audience loved it. 🙂
Fremont Street is really pretty cool. They have a light show projected on a huge blocks-long overhead screen. They have all kinds of bands and performers scheduled to play on the various stages. And then there are all the unscheduled ‘performers’. People who just like to come out and play (more on that later). 🙂
I already posted one photo from my trip so Las Vegas, but it’s such a dreamy kind of place. I thought about it and came up with some more ideas.
He was a little before my time, (I preferred David Cassidy from the Partridge Family), but I’ve heard plenty of women say they thought ELVIS was ‘the bomb’, ‘hot’, ‘somethin’ else’, ‘sexy’. Dreamy, in other words. 🙂
Here are a few photos I took of Elvis (impersonator) on Fremont Street. He was performing right outside my door (while I was staying downtown at the Golden Nugget). He did put on a good show, everyone enjoyed it. 🙂
Todays’ assignment from the Writing 101 Challenge is to write about the ‘three most important songs in your life’. Then they carry on in the assignment about ‘free writing’ and ‘committing to a writing practice”.
Here goes…
1. Son of a Son of a Sailor by Jimmy Buffet. I’m sure some of you might have an idea of why this song is important to me. “I went out on the sea for adventure”. Yep, that’s me. I always have identified with this particular song. I always loved Jimmy Buffet. I think he’s a great songwriter. He always tells a story in his songs and it’s usually a story I can understand and relate to. I grew up on the beach in Florida. My town used to be a little fishing village. We had plenty of characters hanging around. Many of them were the same familiar types Buffet sings about. I remember a few times growing up when Buffet would come through our town visiting. I saw him play a few times at some of my favorite local bars (I was still underage). My stepmother told me once that his manager was married to my stepsister. I never was that close to her so I never investigated any of that. I love that particular song since it seems to tell so much of what I feel like. The only thing that gets me is the whole “SON” of a “SON” of a Sailor. They never talk about the ‘daughter’ of a sailor, unless it’s something like she’s sitting around waiting for her loved one to come home. I was always a little jealous (maybe more than a little) about how the men always had it so easy. They could do all the things I always wanted to do so badly. For ME, it was always such a huge fight. Even now, it’s still a struggle. I should have been born a man!
2. House of the Rising Sun. I always loved this song. It was the first song I learned how to play on the guitar. It’s such a soulful song and so easy to sing. I still sing it for kareoke sometimes. I love New Orleans. It’s one of the reasons I chose to move to Texas to go to school for my AB ticket instead of one of the other 2 schools in the country at the time (San Diego or North Carolina). I thought I would be able to go to New Orleans every weekend to party. I thought I could go to Mexico every other weekend and El Paso to visit family fairly often too. I had NO idea how big Texas was or how long it took to drive to any of those places from where I moved to go to school.
3. What do you do with a Drunken Sailor. This was the song we sang all the time when we were getting rowdy when I was in high school on the sailing ships. We sang it at the end of my high school graduation on the wharf in Copenhagen. We were all dressed in our blue jeans and blue Oceanic t- shirts with our yellow foul weather jackets on. We had our diplomas printed on the back side of some Russian chocolate wrappers we had saved up special for it. I love how this song is such a FUN song to sing. It gets more and more creative after the first few verses.

OK. I went a couple of minutes over my time limit that I set for myself to ‘free write’. I had a hard time holding back from adding some interesting links. No editing, no thinking hard, just letting the words flllooooowwwww…
So, I didn’t want to deprive anyone of seeing what I’m talking about, so here are some links. 🙂
Here’s a video Son of a Son of a Sailor
Here’s one of the Animals singing the House of the Rising Sun
And here’s a link to an earlier post with a great video of the Drunken Sailor Song. 🙂
Here’s a rolickin’ old sea song for your Sunday morning. It’s sung by Gavin Friday and seems like a good example of the idea of the old style traditional sailors songs. Enjoy! 🙂
Baltimore Whores
There were four old whores of Baltimore Drinking the blood red wine. And all their conversation was “Yours is smaller than mine.’
Timy, roly, poly, tickle my hole-y, Smell of my slimy slough. Then drag your nuts across my guts, I’m one of the whorey crew.
“You’re a liar”, said the first whore, “Mine’s as big as the air. The birds fly in, the birds fly out, And never touch a hair.”
Timy, roly, poly, tickle my hole-y, Smell of my slimy slough. Then drag your nuts across my guts, I’m one of the whorey crew.
“You’re a liar”, said the second, “Mine’s as big as the sea. The ship sails in, the ship sails out, Never troubles me.”
Timy, roly, poly, tickle my hole-y, Smell of my slimy slough. Then drag your nuts across my guts, I’m one of the whorey crew.
“You’re a liar”, said the third one, “Mine’s as big as the moon. The men jump in, the men jump out, And never touch the womb.”
Timy, roly, poly, tickle my hole-y, Smell of my slimy slough. Then drag your nuts across my guts, I’m one of the whorey crew.
Swab your decks, me hearties Slice them up with pride You sons of whores Yours is smaller than mine
“You’re a liar”, said the last whore, “Mine’s the biggest of all. A fleet sailed in on the first of June, And didn’t come back till fall.”
Timy, roly, poly, tickle my hole-y, Smell of my slimy slough. Then drag your nuts across my guts, I’m one of the whorey crew.
I was fiddling around with my i-pod the other day and listening to some music from home. I thought maybe I’d share some of my favorites.
I haven’t really been able to keep up with my ‘editorial calendar’ I came up with on assignment from the Zero to Hero Blogging Challenge. I was going to do a feature called ‘Wild Wednesday’ (or creature feature) and another on the weekends called Song of the Sea, but the time just flies too fast.
So much of my time is spent offshore where I’m lucky to be able to get online at all and the connection speed is pretty slow. When I’ve been home lately I’ve been so caught up in just trying to get caught up, I haven’t had much time to work on my blog at all so it’s been kind of hit and miss as to what I post and when. 🙁
I’m still trying to post at least a couple of times a week and keep it interesting. I do like the photography challenges and I like to post good stuff I find to share, things like good recipes, interesting articles, beautiful pictures, cool ideas, and good music.
I thought some of you might like this song. I love John Prine, he’s a great songwriter. I always love a good story-teller. Iris Dement is the perfect match for him in this song. Listen to the lyrics, I think you’ll enjoy it. 🙂
