This Morning’s Floods

I drove up to Houston this morning to go to work. It was nice enough when I left the house about 0530. It started raining just past beltway 8 on the way in. I made it to the intersection of 288 and 610 and they were turning people around. I tried to go ahead and get on to 59, but the water was too deep and I had to turn around.

I had to backtrack to beltway 8, took that to 59N and then tried again. It was close in a couple of places, but I made it all the way up to work only to find out the power was out there and so they had cancelled classes for the day.

Yes, they had sent out emails, but I have to leave the house at 0530 to get to work by 0700 considering traffic, weather, etc. I don’t have any way to check email once I leave the house. 🙁

I’m fixin’ to turn on the weather to see if it’s still predicted to be dangerous to drive in to Houston. I’ll still plan on heading in, but will try to call a friend who lives near there to see how things are. I hope they’re working tomorrow, I can sure use the money.

Here’s what it looked like…

I’m sure glad he was able to rescue that armadillo! 😉

  1. You can’t pull over and check email on phone?
Could someone else checvk and call you? (I mean a REALLY close friend since giving out password always scary.) Too bad Becky and Larry moved. Miss seeing her all the time.

    • Hi Bonnie,
No, I only have an old style flip phone. No data or even texts. Besides, no one would know except the people who work in that building. I’m going to try and call my friend there in the morning, but I’ll still have to be on the road for a while before I call if I want to be on time if they do have the class. If not, can turn around and go home.
Yeah, I miss Becky and Larry too. She called me the other night about 0130. Told me I need to start taking pictures of ‘windmills’. I don’t really see too many of them, she says she sees them all over the place.
I prefer taking photos of boats, birds and animals. Natural things mostly. I’ve been trying to figure out how to sell that stuff. Just posted a couple on society6, hoping to get some attention there. I need to upload more, but even tho I’ve been home for so long, I still can never seem to get anything done.

      • I know what you mean. Easy to put things off then you can’t be rejected. DON’T YELL AT ME! I’m saying because that’s where I started with my writing. Finally “got it.” They couldn’t reject me; they didn’t know me. It’s all about the work. Find some stock shot buyers and submit. After nearly 30 books and magazine articles and stories too numerous to count, I’m still insecure about my talent. I was accepted for two different Chicken Soup for the Soul books. They pick 101 out of 3,000-4,000 entries. They rejected last one I entered. Scared me. So I sent them another on Saturday and waiting begins. Have you thought about package? Your photos are fantastic, but so is your writing. Great to combine. If you only submit photos, the publisher has to pay someone else to research and write story. If you do story they have to send out photog. Anyone who makes their lives easier is really appreciated. Been following g you long time, so pretty well know. Ever think about ghosting a blog? Or starting an additional one?

        • Thanks for the comments Bonny.
Congratulations on your writing! That’s fantastic! I’ve been working on that, but not getting around to it very often. I’ve had a couple of stories published, I know I can do it. I just need to get off my ass and DO IT. I’ve been so stressed and tired lately, I just haven’t been able to motivate.
I always tell them I have photos available. They’ve used them a few times. I don’t know if you saw it, but they published my photo on the front page of the FACTS a couple of weeks ago. They contacted me about an article they were writing on local meetup groups. I told them about my group the Mariners Meetup and gave them a couple of photos to use. They chose one of the Sea Scouts down from HoustonGalveston all dressed up for Texas Navy Day. I wish they would have used my name, but they just put ‘contributed photo’.
I don’t mean to yell at you. Sorry if I did.
I do know what you mean about rejection. I have been trying to post my photos on the stock agencies for a couple of years now. I’m on big stock, dreams time and can stock so far. Those are the ones that have accepted me. Yes, it is very hard to get accepted, especially since I usually can’t see what they’re rejecting it over. Most of the time it’s ‘noise’ but I don’t see any when I look at the photo. Or ‘too much editing’ when I’ve done nothing more than crop it a little. I’ll keep trying.
It just takes me forever to get the editing done and then trying to upload. My computers have been giving me a HELL of a time over the last month! Here I am at home, with not much better to do. It’s a perfect time to work on my writing and photos, but I’m stuck without the internet!
ATT is coming (again) Thursday. I sure hope they can get it working properly again. This is driving me completely bats hit crazy!
As for ghosting a blog? what is that??
Additional one? I have 2 now and can barely keep up. I’m contemplating starting over again since this new one just isn’t working the way it should. Over a year and a half, I should definitely have more than 13 followers and that is what it tells me I have on my mailing list! It’s really a lot of work keeping up with it all, even for just one blog. I’m not sure what I want to do.
I’m going to Houston this weekend for a wordpress meetup group. I really hope someone there can help me fix it. It’s incredibly frustrating!

    • So far I’m good Terri. Most of the real damage has been in Houston.
I feel so bad for those people, many of them were still trying to recover from floods not too long ago.

    • Still good Terri, thanks. I think it might be clearing up some from today. Things were much drier up in Houston this morning, not near as many road closures or flooded freeways.
