Songs of the Sea: Rolling on the River

https://youtu.be/brdqJ29PQac

Here’s a classic for my Songs of the Sea series. Ike and Tina Turner with “Rolling on the River’ (Proud Mary). Back in the days! Love this stuff!

I was recently ‘rolling down the river’ myself, complements to the great people of Minnesota. They put on a great party for the attendees of the TBEX, with great food, drinks, music and even a ride on a riverboat! I couldn’t help thinking of this song. 😉

Tina Turner – Rolling On De River Lyrics

Send “Rolling On De River” Ringtone to your Cell

Y’ know, every now and then

I think you might like to hear something from us

Nice and easy

But there’s just one thing

You see we never ever do nothing

Nice and easy

We always do it nice and rough

So we’re gonna take the beginning of this song

And do it easy

Then we’re gonna do the finish rough

This is the way we do proud mary

And we’re rolling, rolling, rolling on the river

Listen to the story

I left a good job in the city

Working for the man every night and day

And I never lost one minute of sleeping

Worrying ’bout the way things might have been

Big wheel keep on turning

Proud mary keep on burning

And we’re rolling, rolling

Rolling on the river

Cleaned a lot of plates in memphis

Pumped a lot of tane down in new orleans

But I never saw the good side of the city

Till I hitched a ride on a riverboat queen

Big wheel keep on turning

Proud mary keep on burning

And we’re rolling, rolling

Rolling on the river

If you come down to the river

I bet you gonna find some people who live

You don’t have to worry if you got no money

People on the river are happy to give

Songs of the Sea: Against the Wind

https://youtu.be/R8x9oNZ7CcI

Here’s another for my Songs of the Sea series. This is one of my favorite Bob Seger songs. I grew up with this stuff. 🙂

Most people probably wouldn’t think of this as a sailing song, or anything to do with the sea. To me, as a sailor, “against the wind” always means hard times, a rough slog. I’ve been dealing with a lot of that lately. 🙁

Let me know what you think. Do you like this song? Have any memories? Thoughts about it?

“Against The Wind”

It seems like yesterday
But it was long ago
Janey was lovely, she was the queen of my nights
There in the darkness with the radio playlng low
And the secrets that we shared
The mountains that we moved
Caught like a wildfire out of control
Till there was nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove

And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh so tight
Wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then

Against the wind
We were runnin’ against the wind
We were young and strong, we were runnin’
Against the wind

And the years rolled slowly past
And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
I found myself further and further from my home
And I guess I lost my way
There were oh so many roads
I was living to run and running to live
Never worried about paying or even how much I owed
Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time
Breaking all of the rules that would bend
I began to find myself searchin’
Searchin’ for shelter again and again
Against the wind
A little something against the wind
I found myself seeking shelter against the wind

Well those drifters days are past me now
I’ve got so much more to think about
Deadlines and commitments
What to leave in, what to leave out

Against the wind
I’m still runnin’ against the wind
I’m older now but still running
Against the wind
Well I’m older now and still running
Against the wind

Songs of the Sea: Lost Sailor

https://youtu.be/vMHjhoB3USM

Here’s another good one for my Songs of the Sea series: Lost Sailor by the Grateful Dead. I’ve never been what you would call a “Deadhead“, tho I do enjoy their music. I guess I was just a little bit too young to really get into all the ‘hippy’ stuff going on back then that the Dead was associated with.

I don’t figure you have to be stoned to enjoy their music, but maybe it helps?

LOST SAILOR

Lyrics By: John Barlow
Music By: Bob Weir

Compass card is spinning
Helm is swingin’ to and fro
Ooh where’s the dog star
Ooh where’s the moon
You’re lost sailor
You’ve been too long at sea (note 1)

Some days the gales are howling
Some days the sea is still as glass
Ooh reef the mainsail
Ooh lash the mast
You’re lost sailor
You’ve been too long at sea

Now the shore-lights beckon
Yeah there’s a price for being free

Yeah the sea birds cry (note 2)
There’s a ghost wind blowin’
It’s calling you to that misty swirling sea
Till the chains of your dreams are broken
No place in this world you can be

You’re lost sailor
You’ve been way too long at sea
Now the shore-lights beckon
Yeah there’s a price for being free

Drifting yeah drifting
Yeah drifting and dreaming

‘Cause there’s a place you’ve never been (note 3)
Maybe a place you’ve never seen
You can hear her calling on the wind
Go on and drift your life away
Yeah just drifting and dreaming
Maybe drift your life away
Drifting and dreaming
Yes I’m going on a dream
Maybe going on a dream
Maybe going on a dream
Maybe going on a dream

Songs of the Sea: If I Had a Boat

https://youtu.be/KmxLUocv-gU

This is a different version of this song (Lyle Lovett does it too). It’s a new one for me and a new musician too. I think I might have to check him out some more. I can’t say I ever heard of James Vincent McMorrow before. I was just googling up songs about the ocean, the sea, the water, sailing, etc and came up with this one. 😉

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I sure wish I had a boat right about now!

Songs of the Sea: The Tide is High

Here’s a good one for my Songs of the Sea series. The Tide is High by Blondie. I remember it from when I was a kid.

I thought of it today cause I was talking to an old friend earlier and she was telling me about how high the tide was down at the beach this afternoon.

There was a big party (surfers reunion) planned and we were wondering how all that water everywhere was going to affect things.

I used to be so into stuff like that. I loved to go to parties and meet new people. I was never into dancing much, but I liked to listen to the music and even used to play a little guitar and sing.

I guess I’m getting old. I’m too paranoid to go out anymore. I just can’t deal with the cops. I don’t like to be around big crowds of people I don’t know. I’ve pretty much forgotten how to play guitar, and my voice has sure gone to hell. 🙁

Hopefully the tide goes down enough for the party to go on. Somehow I doubt a little extra water on the beach will slow it down much. 😉

Song of the Sea: The Ocean- Dar Williams

Here’s another for my Songs of the Sea series. Dar Williams is another of my favorite singer/songwriters. I love her stories, she can really sing too. I’ve got a couple of her CDs. I listen to them while I’m driving. 😉

The Ocean- Dar Williams

When I went to your town
On the wide open shore
Oh, I must confess, I was drawn
I was drawn to the ocean

I thought it spoke to me, It said, “Look at us
We’re not churches, not schools
Not skating ponds, swimming pools
And we have lost people, haven’t we though?”
Oh, that’s what the ocean can know of a body

And that’s when I came back to town
This town is a song about you
You don’t know how lucky you are
You don’t know how much I adore you
You are the welcoming, back from the ocean

I went back to the ocean today
With my books and my papers
I went to the rocks by the ocean
But the weather changed quickly

Oh, the ocean said, “What are you trying to find
I don’t care, I’m not kind
I’ve bludgeoned your sailors
I’ve spat out their keepsakes
Oh, it’s ashes to ashes, but always the ocean”

But the ocean can’t come to this town
This town is a song about you
You don’t know how lucky you are
You don’t know how much I adore you
You are the welcoming back from the ocean

And the ones that can know you so well
Are the ones, that can swallow you whole
I have a good and I have an evil
I thought the ocean, the ocean thought nothing
You are the welcoming back from the ocean

I didn’t go back today, I wanted to show you
That I was more land than water
I went to pick flowers, I brought them to you
Look at me, look at them, with their salt up the stem
But you frowned when I smiled and I tried to arrange them

You said, “Let me tell you the song of this town”
You said, “Everything closes at five
After that, well you just got the bars”

You don’t know how precious you are
Walking around with your little shoes dangling
I am the one who lives with the ocean
It’s where we came from, you know
And sometimes I just want to go back
After a day, we drink ’til we’re drowning

Walk to the ocean, wade in with our workboots
Wade in our workboots, try to finish the job
You don’t know how precious you are
I am the one who lives with the ocean
You don’t know how, I am the one
You don’t know how, I am the one

Songs of the Sea: Into the Mystic

https://youtu.be/O0DJ8hWgNes

Here’s another for my Songs of the Sea series. Into the Mystic by Van Morrison.

This is one of my all time favorite songs. I love it! I love Van Morrison’s voice. Some guys can just turn me on with their voice. Morrison’s one (David Bowie is another).

This song just resonates with me in so many ways. I love the music, the singing, the lyrics. The images in this video are pretty nice too. I just get so into it. Hope you like it too. Enjoy…

Into The Mystic

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don’t have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And magnificently we will flow into the mystic

When that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don’t have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will flow into the mystic
Come on girl…

Too late to stop now…

A to Z: Beyond the Sea

Here’s my second post for today (I had to skip yesterday due to having no internet) for the A to Z Challenge. We’re to post for 26 days straight, one for each letter of the alphabet.

Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin is a real classic. It was one of the first songs I chose for my Songs of the Sea series (check out the rest if you get a chance).

I remember when I was growing up, my father used to love this song. He would sing along or dance around the house to the music. I always liked it too.

I was surprised to hear the mate really getting into it out on the Ocean Alliance last time I was on there. He had the whole bridge team (including me) singing along and really getting into it! (Thanks A.)!!

I really like it too. I hope you all will enjoy it as much as I did. 🙂

Here are the lyrics so you can sing along. 😉

Beyond the Sea”
Somewhere beyond the sea
Somewhere waiting for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailing

Somewhere beyond the sea
She’s there watching for me
If I could fly like birds on high
Then straight to her arms
I’d go sailing

It’s far beyond the stars
It’s near beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon

We’ll meet beyond the shore
We’ll kiss just as before
Happy we’ll be beyond the sea
And never again I’ll go sailing

I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
We’ll meet (I know we’ll meet) beyond the shore
We’ll kiss just as before
Happy we’ll be beyond the sea
And never again I’ll go sailing

No more sailing
So long sailing
Bye, bye sailing…

Songs of the Sea: Swear Like a Sailor

Here’s one for my Songs of the Sea series. It’s a little different. I’ve never heard of the singer before. I probably never would have except he came up in my Google search. I kind of like the song. It’s nice and mellow. The video is nice too, even tho I’ve never been able to stand up on a surfboard for more than 2 seconds. 🙂

Swear Like a Sailor- Tep No

I had a thought running through my head
Now you’re gone, I don’t remember it
I had the life and then I see you
Now our love is all see-through
So, no worries, no worries, no worries now
‘Cause love just comes and goes
No worries, no worries
I swear like a sailor, sailor from my bad behavior

And if you come and go it won’t matter anymore,
It won’t matter anymore, no
And if you can’t stay slow, I’ll be waiting at the door,
I’ll be waiting at the door, oh
And if you come and go it won’t matter anymore,
It won’t matter anymore, no
And if you can’t stay slow, I’ll swear like a sailor,
Sailor from my bad behavior

I have a lover back in England,
She’s a star, she’s like Taylor Swift
I come home, don’t remember it
‘Cause she’s gone, she don’t exist.

So, no worries, no worries, no worries now
‘Cause love just comes and goes
No worries, no worries
I swear like a sailor, and say screw you Taylor Swift!
Screw you Taylor Swift!

And if you come and go it won’t matter anymore,
It won’t matter anymore, no
And if you can’t stay slow, I’ll be waiting at the door,
I’ll be waiting at the door, oh
And if you come and go it won’t matter anymore,
It won’t matter anymore, no
And if you can’t stay slow, I’ll swear like a sailor,
Sailor from my bad behavior

Donna The Buffalo: Positive Friction

Just for the hell of it. Here’s some good music from Donna the Buffalo. Another of my favorites. 🙂

Hello

This song by Adele has been pretty popular for a while now. I like it, but I think this parody (SNL did one too) is pretty good. I like their sense of humor. Really silly. 😉

Songs of the Sea: Deep Wide Ocean

Here’s another song for my Songs of the Sea series. It’s a little different from the kind of thin I usually listen to. I only found it cause I was messing around online looking for music for the series. I’m not sure why, but I like it. 😉

Deep Wide Ocean- The Jezabels

What a simple want
To be free of god
A finger on your own creation

Queen told me to eat of kerosene
I must be real for the nation

Shortie, go by
Should you ever touch the sky
There’s no need to cry “deep wide ocean”
Any more now

You should know the score
Of my hidden war
I’m fighting on
But it’s all about you

I follow in the space you travelled
Your trail of heart unravels
I pass the clearing you made for when happiness was
Always

So carry the sign
Just a thimble in your eye
And if they should ask
How you knew me…

Oh Shortie, you won
Something deeper has begun
There’s no need to cry deep wide ocean

You’re toeing a line
Something real or something divine
There’s no need to choose
Can be both of them

To be right here, over there
Think and feel softest hair
You remind me of something yet to be lived
Oh, baby, I can’t complain
For I love to watch you play
No, I could not contain it for my eyes

And a story
Of many graces you told me
And forever I will love you
For all time

Here I go yo,
Rockin’ solo

I’ll be around if you’re low, though
Call me Anna, Poly-anna

Texas Tornados: Hey Baby Que Paso

Hey, I’m in Mexico! How about let’s enjoy some Tex-Mex music?

A bunch of old guys really get it on! Don’t let the ads at the start scare you off. There’s some interesting background in the video before they get to the performance. The video is straight from the Texas Music Scene (great show).

I always loved this band! I’m glad to see they’re back. 🙂

Lyrics to Que Paso (Hey Baby)

Hey, baby, que paso?
Thought I was your only vato
Hey, baby, que paso?

Please don’t leave me de ese modo

Come on, baby, turn around
Let me see your pretty blue eyes
Don’t you know that I love you
Please don’t leave me (disun poco)

Hey, baby, que paso?
Thought I was your only vato
Hey, baby, que paso?
Won’t you give uno beso?

Hey, baby, que paso?
Thought I was your only vato
Hey, baby, que paso?
Please don’t leave me de ese modo

Come on, baby, turn around
Let me show you how I feel
Don’t you that I love you
And my corizone is real

Hey, baby, que paso?
Thought I was your only vato
Hey, baby, que paso?
Won’t you give uno beso?

Hey, baby, que paso?
Thought I was your only vato
Hey, baby, que paso?
Please don’t leave me de ese modo
Hey, baby, que paso?
Thought I was your only vato
Hey, baby, que paso?
Won’t you give uno beso?

Hey, baby, que paso?
Thought I was your only vato
Hey, baby, que paso?

Songs of the Sea: Seaside

Here’s another one for my Songs of the Sea series (and another post for the Just Jot It January challenge). It’s short and sweet. 🙂

Do you want to go to the seaside? I do! I’ll be there tomorrow. 🙂

Seaside
Do you want to go to the seaside?
I’m not trying to say that everybody wants to go
I fell in love at the seaside
I handled my charm with time and slight of hand
Do you want to go to the seaside?
I’m not trying to say that everybody wants to go
I fell in love at the seaside
She handled her charm with time and slight of hand, and oh
But I’m just trying to love you
In any kind of way
But I find it hard to love you girl
When you’re far away
Away
Do you want to go to the seaside?
I’m not trying to say that everybody wants to go
But I fell in love on the seaside
On the seaside
In the seaside

Oneness

Today’s prompt for the Just Jot It January challenge is: oneness.

As soon as I saw it, I thought of this song…

I’ve always loved reggae music and Jimmy Cliff is one of my favorite artists. This video is not the best, but I like how he gets all the people dancing together.

I like the words, the music and the message too. I do think people are all the same (on a basic level). I remember coming back from high school after traveling the world on the sailing ships. People got so mad at me when I would say that (especially about the USSR).

But I still think it’s true. I think there is a connection, I do believe everything in this world is connected in some way. I don’t have any idea how, and not in any religious way, but I can see it works that way on this planet. Woo-woo, a little new- agey, but more on the level of all the atoms and molecules being recycled over and over again. Karma. Thoughts and emotions. Ecology. Yeah, all that kind of stuff. 😉

“We All Are One”

Mmm…mmm…mmm….
Yeah
Mmm…hmm…mmm….oh…

We all are one, we are the same person
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (Oh, yeah)
We all are one, same universal world
I’ll be you, you’ll be me

No matter where we are born,
We are human beings
The same chemistry
Where emotions and feelings
All corresponding in love
Compatible

You can’t get around it,
No matter how hard you try
You better believe it
And if you should find out
That you are no different than I
Reply

We all are one (We all),
We are the same person (Same person)
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (I’ll be me, you’ll be you)
We all are one (We all), same universal world
I’ll be you, you’ll be me

The only difference I can see
Is in the conscience
And the shade of our skin
Doesn’t matter, we laugh, we chatter
We smile, we all live for

And the feelings that make
All those faces always renew
So true, so true
And would you believe that I have
All those same feelings too
The same as you

We all are one, we are the same person
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (I’ll be me, you’ll be you)
We all are one (We all), same universal world
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (Mmm, hmm, mmm, hmm)

We all are one (We all),
We are the same person (Same person)
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (I’ll be me, you’ll be you)
We all are one (We all), same universal world
I’ll be you, you’ll be me

Look at the children, they’re having fun
With no regards to why
They all look different but deep inside
Their feelings of love they don’t hide, they don’t hide
They don’t hide, they don’t hide

We all are one, we are the same person
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (Oh, yeah)
We all are one, same universal world
I’ll be you, you’ll be me

We all are one (We all),
We are the same person (The same person)
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (No matter where you go)
We all are one (We all),
Same universal (Same person)
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (Oh, yeah)

We all are one (You know, I know, we all know),
We are the same person (Oh, yeah)
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (Oh, yeah)
We all are one (Emotions and feelings),
Same universal (All corresponding to love)
I’ll be you, you’ll be me (Oh…oh…oh…)

We all are one, we are the same person

Songs of the Sea: Oceans

Here’s a good song for a Sunday. Another one of my Songs of the Sea series. I’m an atheist, so I don’t go along with all the religious stuff in this song. I’ll start believing in god if/when I see some real evidence. I don’t have faith, will never have faith, I want PROOF. Personally I think religion is one of the worst things people have ever invented and we’d all be a lot better off without it. But the music and the singing is very beautiful anyway.

Religion  can ‘inspire’ a lot of people.

Just like so many churches are stunningly beautiful. They took the best efforts of thousands of men over decades to build. They cost millions of dollars.

All for nothing really. An invisible, (almost certainly imaginary), being.  All that artwork is still beautiful, even if it was done for nothing but hope and a promise.

Personally, I think it’s really sad. That so much effort is spent on such things, when it could have been used to make things so much better for real people, right here and now. People spend so much effort fixing things for ‘the next life’ instead of fixing THIS one. I think it’s sad.

Even so, I still do appreciate the beauty that’s created.

“Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sovereign hand
Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You’ve never failed and You won’t start now

So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

[6x]
Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

Oh, Jesus, you’re my God!

I will call upon Your name
Keep my eyes above the waves
My soul will rest in Your embrace
I am Yours and You are mine

And this is also another post in the Just Jot It January challenge.

Songs of the Sea: El Marinero y La Sirena

I’ve been reading Texas Music magazine the last couple of days and saw an article about Patricia Vonne. She sounded like someone I just had to learn more about so I looked her up on youtube and found the perfect video for my Songs of the Sea series. 🙂

This song about the sailor and the mermaid is very pretty. Patricia has a beautiful voice and I like the Spanish style music. The guitar and maracas are soothing, but I think this would also make a good song to dance to. I love Spanish/Latin music and dancing! Tango, flamenco, salsa, cumbia, conjunto, rumba, merengue, even mariachi!

I love it all! I only wish I could dance!! (I suck at dancing, I’m clumsy as hell.) 🙁

The song’s story is nice too (tho I don’t understand the Spanish well enough really- I had to look up the translation). The sailor is saved from the shark by the mermaid and they fall in love. Simple love story, but the artwork makes it different and more interesting.

El Marinero y La Sirena

(*Patricia Vonne / Michael Martin)
Y ella a nadar leguas abajo

The Mariner and the Mermaid (English translation)

He was forced to walk the plank
plunging into the icy waters
nailed beneath the Spanish galleon
He felt a crushing blow
descending into the darkness
he felt a warm embrace of tenacious fingers
spinning to the surface with a kiss of life
the sailor & the mermaid
belong to the sea
hear the cry of destiny
of an ardent wounded love
he is destined to sail
above love’s foamy sea
And she, to swim leagues below
his shipwrecked heart can never know
the joy of swimming w/ his true love
their love is a treasure that shines
brighter than gold
when you see a falling star, my enchantress
remember me, my little mermaid
even though you belong to the sea, come with me
I will be your refuge
in my sorrow there is hope, my sailor
that love is not fatal but sincere
Listen to the cry of destiny
at the bottom of the sea where I live

Today’s post for Just Jot It January. 🙂

Songs of the Sea: Dreamboat Anne

https://youtu.be/Ehv65xC7pTU

Here’s another oldie but goodie for my Songs of the Sea series. Its “Dreamboat Annie” by Heart. I remember singing along with this when I was going into high school. I still think it’s a beautiful song 🙂

“Dreamboat Annie”

Heading out this morning into the sun
Riding on the diamond waves, little darlin’ one

Warm wind caress her
Her lover it seems
Oh, Annie
Dreamboat Annie my little ship of dreams

Going down the city sidewalk alone in the crowd
No one knows the lonely one whose head’s in the clouds

Sad faces painted over with those magazine smiles
Heading out to somewhere won’t be back for a while

Songs of the Sea: Sons and Daughters

https://youtu.be/E5H8DwJI0uA

One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands!

I’ve been listening to this CD a lot in my car lately. I’ve been driving a lot more than usual lately. Instead of working offshore, I’ve got some part time work in Houston, so I’ve got a couple of hours a day driving back and forth when they’ve got something for me to do up there. This song always gets me in a good mood while I sing along. 🙂

“Sons And Daughters”

When we arrive, sons and daughters
We’ll make our homes on the water
We’ll build our walls aluminum
We’ll fill our mouths with cinnamon now

These currents pull us ‘cross the border
Steady your boats, arms to shoulder
‘Til tides all pull our hull aground
Making this calm harbor now home

Take up your arms, sons and daughters
We will arise from the bunkers
By land, by sea, by dirigible
We’ll leave our tracks untraceable now

When we arrive, sons and daughters
We’ll make our homes on the water
We’ll build our walls aluminum
We’ll fill our mouths with cinnamon now

When we arrive, sons and daughters
We’ll make our homes on the water
We’ll build our walls aluminum
We’ll fill our mouths with cinnamon now

When we arrive, sons and daughters
We’ll make our homes on the water
We’ll build our walls aluminum
We’ll fill our mouths with cinnamon now

Hear all the bombs fade away
Hear all the bombs fade away
Hear all the bombs fade away
Hear all the bombs fade away

Songs of the Sea: The Lighthouse’s Tale

This is such a beautiful song.

I love this band. Nickel Creek. I listen to them a lot, and not just because I forget to change out the CD player in the truck! The fiddle and mandolin are amazing. I could listen to them all day.

This is really a sad song. When I really pay attention to the lyrics, I could almost cry. The sea is beautiful, but sometimes it’s cruel. I never forget how dangerous it can be.

As they say in the safety meetings: ‘complacency kills’.

“The Lighthouse’s Tale”

I am a lighthouse, worn by the weather and the waves.
I keep my lamp lit, to warn the sailors on their way.

I’ll tell a story, paint you a picture from my past.
I was so happy, but joy in this life seldom lasts.

I had a keeper, he helped me warn the ships at sea.
We had grown closer, ’till his joy meant everything to me.

And he was to marry, a girl who shone with beauty and light.
And they loved each other, and with me watched the sunsets into night.

[Chorus:]
And the waves crashing around me, the sand slips out to sea.
And the winds that blow remind me, of what has been, and what can never be.

She’d had to leave us, my keeper he prayed for a safe return.
But when the night came, the weather to a raging storm had turned.

He watched her ship fight, but in vain against the wild and terrible wave.
In me so helpless, as dashed against the rock she met her end.

[Chorus]

Then on the next day, my keeper found her washed up on the shore.
He kissed her cold face, that they’d be together soon he’d swore.

I saw him crying, watched as he buried her in the sand.
And then he climbed my tower, and off of the edge of me he ran.

[Chorus]

I am a lighthouse, worn by the weather and the waves.
And though I am empty, I still warn the sailors on their way.

Hayloft- Nickel Creek

This one has really been sticking in my mind lately. I really like a lot of their music. The mandolin and fiddle are fantastic!

Check it out. Let me know how you like it. 🙂

Songs of the Sea: Sail On Sailor

Here’s a classic. The Beach Boys singing “Sail On Sailor”. Read the lyrics for a not so nice version of time spent at sea. Good or bad out there, I still love it! 🙂

“Sail On Sailor”

I sailed an ocean, unsettled ocean
Through restful waters and deep commotion
Often frightened, unenlightened
Sail on, sail on sailor

I wrest the waters, fight Neptune’s waters
Sail through the sorrows of life’s marauders
Unrepenting, often empty
Sail on, sail on sailor

Caught like a sewer rat alone but I sail
Bought like a crust of bread, but oh do I wail

Seldom stumble, never crumble
Try to tumble, life’s a rumble
Feel the stinging I’ve been given
Never ending, unrelenting
Heartbreak searing, always fearing
Never caring, persevering
Sail on, sail on, sailor

I work the seaways, the gale-swept seaways
Past shipwrecked daughters of wicked waters
Uninspired, drenched and tired
Wail on, wail on, sailor

Always needing, even bleeding
Never feeding all my feelings
Damn the thunder, must I blunder
There’s no wonder all I’m under
Stop the crying and the lying
And the sighing and my dying

Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor

Phoenix to the Faire

I got back from Phoenix on Sunday. On the way, I stopped off at the Renaissance Festival (Faire). I’ve been trying to go for a couple of weeks, but it has been raining every weekend. It’s not really much fun anymore to wander around in the rain.

This Sunday was finally nice. The weather was gorgeous! Sunny and cool. 🙂

So I went straight from the airport up to the Fair. Looks like everybody else in Texas had the same plans!

The traffic was horrible! It took me over 2 hours just to get from Magnolia to the festival grounds. That’s only about 6-7 miles!

Once I finally got there, I was happy to wander around all day. There was plenty to do. Watch the jugglers, jousting, fools, belly dancers, magicians. Listen to some really cool music, I really liked the Scottish group “Tartanic”. They put on a fantastic show!

There was all kinds of food to sample, set up in ‘villages’: Greek, Italian, Polish, Mexican, etc along with the usual fair foods (turkey legs, cheesecake on a stick, corn on the cob, gyros, sausage on a stick, funnel cakes, etc).

There were interesting shops for such necessities as armor, magical supplies, leather, candles, writing instruments, weaponry, jewelry, hats and clothing (mostly to fit the theme).

I loved seeing all the creative costumes. Some of the barbarians were really scary. Some of the costumes were just plain weird. Some of the outfits were just gorgeous. Some ladies I talked with told me they spent thousands of dollars on their costumes!

I really loved some of the clothes, I even went to try on a few. I couldn’t find a corset that fit. That’s probably a good thing, they were NOT cheap!

Besides, when would I ever wear something like that other than Halloween? Or maybe for the St Patricks Day festivities here at Surfside?

I didn’t get home til after midnight. Slept late Monday and didn’t get much done. More on the Festival later, once I get caught up. Lots to tell. 🙂

Lucinda Williams: Essence

Something a little different. It’s not a ‘Song of the Sea”, but just plain, good music. I love all different kinds of music: blues, bluegrass, reggae, old rock and roll, classical, alternative country, pretty much everything except rap, heavy metal and opera.

I especially like music that tells a story with the lyrics. I love singers who can write a good song that means something.

Lucinda Williams is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. This whole album is great. I love this song!

Songs of the Sea: Girl and the Sea

Here’s a good Halloweeny Song of the Sea from the Presets. I really like how the video goes along with the lyrics and the music here. It makes for a  kind of melancholy and fantastical feeling. I thought it was a good one to post for Halloween weekend.

“Girl And The Sea”

Tonight the
Tonight the hills are watching her
As she runs towards the sea
Yeah she runs so she’ll be free

And of all the friends and enemies she’s made along the way
They are no where in her thoughts
As she dives beneath the waves

And he’s the one that you’ve seen sometimes on TV
And his shirt is on the ground
While he’s tackled by police
And the parcel that he throws across the bridge into the creek
It’ll flow towards the sea
It will meet with her tomorrow

No place,
Some time
We’ll clear
Our eyes
And when
You’re down
I’ll come around

And all the
Places she’s been along the way
Flames are licking at their walls
Night glows with their remains

From far away the animals come gather round to see
But she knows not how they feel
And she knows not what it means

When she was young we’d ask her what she’d like to be
And she’d close her eyes and dream…

…now we’re no where in her thoughts
As she dives beneath the waves.

A place
I’ve found
Could be
All ours
But I’ve seen
Where you
Would rather be.

Songs of the Sea: If I Had a Boat

Here’s a good one by Lyle Lovett. I hope you like it. 🙂

Songs of the Sea: Southern Cross

I’ve been in Houston the last couple of days at the DP Conference. I don’t know why, but maybe it’s because I might not have a boat to go back to for a while, but I was really thinking about sailing tonight. Jimmy Buffett was always one of my favorite songwriters and this is a good song (Crosby, Stills & Nash did it first).

I really wish I could just chuck it all and go sail around the world!!!!!

Songs of the Sea: Shark in the Water

I’ve really been falling behind with posts in my ‘Songs of the Sea’ series. Sorry to have left you all hanging, but on this vessel I just haven’t had the internet access I need to keep up with my blog or anything else.

I found this video in my drafts tonight, just trying to see if I could find something quick to post. I hope you like it. 🙂

Songs of the Sea: Weird Fishes

Here’s another for my Songs of the Sea series. I’m not really sure what to say about this one. Is it electronica? It’s not the kind of thing I usually listen to, but I really liked the video. Some of those guys really looked like they were getting into the groove. 😉

Let me know what you think. 🙂

Songs of the Sea: Pirate Chantey

Here’s another little sea chantey to add to your musical collection. It’s done by Key & Peele, 2 funny guys who used to be on MADtv (which I loved). I really used to love MAD magazine when I was a kid, but the ones they’re coming out with now are nowhere near as funny as they used to be (and no, it’s not just because I’m getting older!).

This sketch somehow manages to be both a little risque’ and PC at the same time. 😉

Pirate Chantey– Key & Peele

“Thar once was a lass so fine,
She was drunk on Barleywine,
I’d been (out) to sea for a month or three,
I knew I could make her mine.
But the lass was past consent,
So it was off with her we went,
And we threw her in bed and we rested her head,
And we left cuz that’s what Gentlemen do…

A woman has a right to a drink or two,
Without worryin’ about what you will do!
We say Yo-HO but we don’t say ‘ho,’
Cuz ‘ho’ is disrespectful, yo.

Thar once was a girl from Leeds,
Who I heard was good on her knees,
So I docked my ship for an overnight trip,
To take care of all of my needs.
She was fine as the tales did tell,
And my mast began to swell,
So I laid her down and I raised her gown,
And performed cunnilingus for an hour or so.

Always take care of yer lady fair,
Cuz they deserve as much attention down there!
We say Yo-HO but we don’t say ‘ho,’
Cuz ‘ho’ is disrespectful, yo.

I once had a woman so fair,
Whose whom contained my heir,
With a son by my side, the seas we’d ride,
The child she would bear.
But my woman she was no fool,
She was working her way through school,
So I did support when she chose to abort,
Because it’s her body and therefor her choice.

No we don’t say ‘booty’ ‘less we talkin’ ’bout gold,
and we don’t look at chests ‘less they’s treasure-holds!
With a hat and a feather and a cutlass on our hip,
We don’t say ‘she’ when we’re talking ’bout a ship!
We don’t say ‘bitch’ and we don’t say ‘whore,’
Cuz that language leads to things like body dysmorphia.

Thar was a lady with a golden eye,
And the doctor said she would die,
So she emptied her purse to lift the curse,
And prayed to stay alive.
She awoke the very next day,
And in her grave she lay,
But the scariest part of the story from the start,
Is I bet you assumed the doctor was a man.

Women are doctors too,
And for a fraction of the doubloons!
We say Yo-HO but we don’t say ‘ho,’
Cuz ‘ho’ is disrespectful, yo.

Thar was a slut with tits to here, and an ass that- (gunshot. he is dead and that is good.)

Cuz it’s Yo-HO but we don’t say ‘ho,’
Cuz ‘ho’ is disrespectful, yo.”
