I learned something today.

About my blog.

My blog has been screwed up since I moved it to this paid (or self hosted) website- Captainjillsjourneys.com. I really had no problems while I was blogging on the free wordpress site- captjillsjourneys.wordpress.com. The only issue there was that I couldn’t find any way to ‘monetize’ it.

I’m still trying to figure out how to do that, but since I’ve moved I’ve had to pretty much start over from scratch and have been slowly (VERY slowly) building up an audience here again.

For a while I thought I had lost ALL my online friends and followers, but after about 3 months I found some of them were still hanging around on my old site. Thanks for sticking it out guys!!

Today, I was talking to a friend (he’s one of my first followers) on the phone and asked him to see if he could subscribe to the new site (this one). NO, he could not! He tried a few times and could get nowhere. He tried ‘liking’ a post and could not do that either. He had no trouble commenting.

Since talking to him, I’ve gone through and re-checked all my settings on my dashboard. I don’t see anything that should prevent anyone from liking or following me here. I’ve got the same settings here as on the old blog which still has no problems.

I next went to my Mailchimp account which is one of the big reasons to move- so I own my mailing list instead of wordpress- and found out I only have 5 subscribers. WTF? Even on my dashboard here it shows me that I have about 600.

I thought before today that there was something screwy with the widget that has the ‘form’ where you can enter your email to follow me. Now I KNOW that there is something messed up between that widget and the Mailchimp email list.

I wish there was someone here local so we could just sit down together and go over all this. I’m sure if I could meet up with some computer geek, I could have this problem fixed without too much trouble.

Does anybody out there have any suggestions for me based on what I’ve just described? Or know anybody around Freeport TX that can help?

  1. I had trouble liking your last post. Today, no issue. A lot is confusing to me but there is a WordPress group on Meetup, in Houston. If you don’t already have it, download the app and search for WordPress. You can send messages directly to the host. Attending their meetings sounds like it would be beneficial. I haven’t been, myself, as I’ve had other priorities but it is on my wish list.

    • Thanks for telling me about that Michelle, I will check that out. I don’t know how long I’ll be around town, that’s the only problem. I’m still waiting for a phone call for work, they told me last week that now they have ‘no idea’ when it will happen but to be ready to go, so I’m waiting for a phone call and can’t be too far from home for very long in case they call.
I’ll try to find the wordpress meet up group and check their schedule. If I don’t hear from work, maybe I can go up there to a meeting. I’m sure it would be helpful. 🙂
Are you in the Houston area too?

      • Yes I am, inside the loop. I just looked on Meetup and it looks like they have started meeting in Kingwood, which is even further. They next meeting is April 23rd. Let me know if you want to go. I may go, as well.

        • If I’m still here (not working), I’ll try to go to that meeting. I wish it was closer (in time and distance) but if it will help me figure out what’s wrong, I will try it.
Thanks for sending me the info. If I go, I’ll definitely let you know. We can go out there together. 🙂
I think it would be interesting to meet other wordpress users (bloggers) in person anyway.

        • Hi Michelle, I did see another reply from you. I’m not sure why you’re not seeing it. It may be that one reply is on one blog and the other is on the other blog? I get all of them together in one stream. Sorry I’m not able to respond more quickly, but I don’t have much time to get on here some days.
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. If I’m still here on Apr 23, I’ll go to the meeting. I’ll let you know and maybe we can go together.

    • thanks for trying to help me figure this out, I see that it did let you like this post. It seems a lot of people are having a lot of trouble with that.

        • thanks. Yeah, it definitely sucks.
I was really disappointed about losing the reader. There are some other things I can’t do anymore either. One is the ‘press this’ tool. I can use that on the old blog, but not on the new one. So, I also had to go back to connect everything to the old one again. 🙁

    • Bing huh? I haven’t looked at Bing in years. I do notice both will come up on Google fairly often and pretty high up, depending on what I’m looking for.
I just need to figure out what’s gone wrong with the buttons.
