Songs of the Sea: A Pirate Looks At 40- Jimmy Buffett

This is one of my all time favorite songs by one of my favorite artists. I grew up on the beach in Florida. I grew up with Jimmy Buffett songs. I always love a good songwriter (storyteller). I always felt like he was writing his songs about me and my friends. 😉

This particular song is really hitting home right now. I just had a birthday and definitely still feeling like I’m “arriving too late”. I’ve mentioned before about how things have changed (for the worse) in the maritime industry.

Yeah, this about sums it up for me…

Yes, I am a pirate two hundred years too late.
The cannons don’t thunder there’s nothin’ to plunder
I’m an over forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late.

Songs of the Sea: Song of the Sea- Dan Fogelberg

This is one of my all time favorite songs by one of my favorite artists. Great video on this one too! I hope you like it. 🙂

Song of the Sea

Broken clouds along the blue horizon
The sun is setting and the wind is dying down
Outward bound, there is music all around
Can you hear it, it’s the, the song of the sea?

Soundings taken at the edge of darkness
The widest silences the heart can ever hear
You can steer to the stars along your lee
Set your bearings to the, the song of the sea

Oh, and the song is as ancient as the days
And the winds upon the waves
Let it carry you away, so far away
(Aaa)

Trim my sails to greet the breakin’ morning
Past the headlands to the rolling open sea
An’ it comes to me, I have never felt so free
As when I’m listening to the, the song of the sea

Oh and the song is as ancient as the days
And the winds upon the waves
Let it carry me away, so far away

Some were meant to watch the world from windows
And never look beyond the road beneath their feet
But for me, I was always meant to be
One forever chasing the song of the sea
The song of the sea
The song of the sea

Thanks for reminding me Ken!! 🙂

2013 Summertime Bike and Blues Fest

I’ve been wanting to get this post done for a while. Something always comes up. I went to the Summertime Bike and Blues Fest last summer and it’s taken me this long to get around to posting these photos.

I went down there with my friend D. They’ve been having this festival in old downtown Freeport for a few years now. It’s kind of neat wandering around down there with all the old buildings, right in the middle of everything.

We had a good time checking out the bikes, listening to the music, trying out the food, running into friends. I always like to go to these things. 🙂

Here are a few photos to get started. I’ll have more later. 😉

Video: Sailing

I always loved this song. 🙂 I’m going sailing this weekend so I thought this would be a good start. 😉

I remember when this song first came out. I was a teenager, still living in Florida. I was living on the beach and sailing my little sea snark just about every day.

My life was about to change in a big way. I went off on the adventure of my life on the sailing ships of the Oceanics School. We ALL loved this song there! Rod Stewart was SO hot!!

“Sailing”

I am sailing, I am sailing,

home again ‘cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.I am flying, I am flying,
like a bird ‘cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
to be with you, to be free.

Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro’ the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro’ the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.

We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again ‘cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.

Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free,
Oh Lord.

PS- does anybody know why he’s singing about sailing while he’s cruising around on a power vessel??? 😉

Songs of the Sea: Little Talks

I hope to make this another ‘regular’ feature here. I love music and I listen to all kinds of things. I like folk, rock, reggae. Irish, Latin, Cajun, blues, bluegrass, classical, etc. I especially love a good ‘ballad’. Pretty much everything except most heavy metal, rap and opera. 😉

I don’t listen to the radio much anymore. I don’t like listening to all the commercials and I really can’t find a station I can listen to for long before I get bored. The only one I listen to now is Houstons KPFT. They’re non commercial, listener sponsored and they have a huge variety of good stuff on there.

I thought I would try to share some of the things I’ve found that I liked on a more regular basis. I have posted a few songs in the past and people seemed to like them. I’ll continue to do that whenever I come across something I really like, but I wanted to showcase here music that relates to the sea in some way.

This particular song is one I just really like. I like the energy, HEY! I loved the imagery in the video. Absolutely fantastic! I liked the melody. I liked the feeling of the whole thing. In all honesty, I could barely make out the lyrics while listening to the song, but I did hear something about a ship. So I guess it’s enough to qualify for a “Song of the Sea”. 😉

So here goes… Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men…

“Little Talks”

Hey! Hey! Hey!

I don’t like walking around this old and empty house
So hold my hand, I’ll walk with you, my dear
[Video version:] The stairs creak as you sleep, it’s keeping me awake
[Live version:] The stairs creak as I sleep, it’s keeping me awake
It’s the house telling you to close your eyes

And some days I can’t even dress myself
It’s killing me to see you this way

‘Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Hey! Hey! Hey!

There’s an old voice in my head that’s holding me back
Well tell her that I miss our little talks
Soon it will be over and buried with our past
We used to play outside when we were young
And full of life and full of love.

[Video version:] Some days I don’t know if I am wrong or right
[Live version:] Some days I feel like I’m wrong when I’m right
Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear

‘Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Hey!
Don’t listen to a word I say
Hey!
The screams all sound the same
Hey!
Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Hey!
Hey!

You’re gone, gone, gone away
I watched you disappear
All that’s left is the ghost of you.
Now we’re torn, torn, torn apart,
There’s nothing we can do
Just let me go we’ll meet again soon
Now wait, wait, wait for me
Please hang around
I’ll see you when I fall asleep

Hey!
Don’t listen to a word I say
Hey!
The screams all sound the same
Hey!
Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Don’t listen to a word I say
Hey!
The screams all sound the same
Hey!

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Video: Yes Ma’am- Weight of the World

Here’s a video of the band I was talking about in my earlier post tonight. I saw them playing in the street as I was window shopping on Royal Street in the French Quarter (New Orleans).

It was a gorgeous Fall day and their playing was just perfect. It put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. They had a bunch of people of all ages/types, dogs, kids on bikes, etc all watching, listening, dancing. It was a great experience.

I bought a CD from them before I wandered off. I really like it. They deserve more notice. The commercial stations don’t play stuff like this, but if you try you can find interesting new music like this on the radio or the internet.

In Houston, I listen to KPFT, 90.1 FM . Its listener- sponsored, no commercials. They have EVERYTHING on there. I like how they have such a huge variety. Everything from Irish music to Latino to Heavy Metal to Zydeco. You really need to go online and check out the schedule. 😉

I’m not sure what to categorize this band as. Folk? Americana? String Band? Bluegrass? Traditional? Alt Country? Blues? They could be called any of that, but the do it all well!

Check out the video.

Video: The Be Good Tanyas- The Littlest Bird

I’m taking a break today from the Zero to Hero Challenge. Todays assignment was to look around at other peoples blogs. Find something there you really liked (not content). I’ve been doing some of that but I haven’t seen anything today that I really MUST have on my blog. 😉

Actually, I did see something a while back, but now I can’t find it again. When I do, then I’ll do more of todays assignment. Or maybe not. 😉  In the meantime I haven’t been doing much with music on here lately. I really love music. All different kinds.

I really like this band. The Be Good Tanyas. I have a couple of their albums. I thought I’d post this particular video since I just did that post on New Orleans and this video was done there (and around).

I see the street performers around the French Quarter every time I go there. I bought a great CD from a band last time I was there. OK, I’ll do another post on them. But first…

Utne Monthly Music Sampler

Utne Monthly Music Sampler.

OK, so here it is (finally). This months (or maybe it’s last months by now) Monthly Music Sampler from Utne Reader.

I always love to get these and check out all the interesting music. Artists I never would have heard of otherwise. I think it’s one of my favorite parts of the magazine, tho they also do the same thing with films/videos, magazines/books, etc and I’ve found a lot of really great stuff from looking at some of their suggestions.

The Utne Reader used to call itself ‘the Best of the Alternative Press’ and that was exactly what it was. Now, their tag line is ‘Cure Ignorance’ which I like, but I’m not sure that is really as accurate or if the magazine is really doing any of that (curing ignorance). 😉

So, this months sampler has some music I really liked a lot. I’ve already made a couple of posts about individual songs…

Other then those 2 bands with the links above (Lily and Madeline and PigPen Theatre Company), there are songs by the Casket Girls, the Temples, the Liminanas, by itsnotyouitsme, and a great one by De Temps Antan (in French I think).

There’s everything from indie folk, to jazz, to psychedelic, to French flavored folk/cajun. There’s a good selection from England, France, Canada, and around the USA. I really enjoyed this months samples. I hope you do too. 🙂

Music Sampler: Song From the Stone

I got my Monthly Music Sampler from Utne Reader a while ago but I’ve been so busy I haven’t had a chance to even look at it til recently. I’ve been trying to catch up on some of my emails and just started looking at some of these samples.

See my earlier post on another song from this months samples (http://captjillsjourneys.wordpress.com/2013/12/11/music-sampler-devil-we-know)

Today’s choice is a song by a group called the PigPen Theatre Company.

This band is a little different.  PigPen IS actually a theatre company, just like their name implies. They put some of their original music in their plays, pretty cool! They just came out with a new album ‘The Way I’m Running’. I think I’ll have to get it. 😉

I listened to this song ‘Song From the Stone’ of theirs from the Sampler and really liked it.

Maybe you will too? Enjoy!

Music Sampler: Devil We Know

I got my Monthly Music Sampler from Utne Reader a while ago but I’ve been so busy I haven’t had a chance to even look at it til now. Today I’m trying to catch up on some of my emails and just started looking at some of these samples. I listened to this song ‘Devil We Know’ by Lily and Madeline and liked it. A lot.

Maybe you will too? Enjoy! 🙂

New Orleans (Workboat Show 2012)

House of Blues

House of Blues

OK, so sorry to all my faithful followers 😉 I’ve been SO busy! Since I got off work I’ve been going non-stop. I made it to the beach clean up (fantastic turnout there)! I managed to get some work of one of my rental houses done . I FINALLY got my taxes for 2012 turned in to my accountants (still was not really finished but there was no way to get all the information to them before time was up so I just had to drop off what I had). And now, I’m in New Orleans for the Workboat Show!

Yeah, its way early this year. Its usually the first week of December. That’s nice since the weather is cool and everything is all decorated for Christmas. It’s different this year, I didn’t think about it, but they’re already decorating for Halloween, so that’s pretty cool too.

I’m staying over a couple extra days to do some tourist stuff. I’m going on a plantation tour tomorrow and a 3-in-1 combo ‘witches brew’ tour Sunday night. I have not managed to get any pictures on the computer yet since I’ve been home, but just to whet your whistle, here are a few from last years show here.

Utne Monthly Music Sampler

Utne Monthly Music Sampler.

OK, Here’s the monthly music sampler from Utne Reader. I can’t even listen to them out here since my computer is screwed up and the internet is too slow for stuff like that. No music, no videos for me til I get off here…

There’s a good selection to check out this month. They have a great variety in this one. Everything from American folk, blues, punk to Indian folk, classical, Bollywood. I would like to listen to some of this stuff, especially the albums by “Over the Rhine” and “Zachary Cale”, but those guys the  “Jaipur Kawa Brass Band” sound super interesting and I think I might like “Rusty Belle” too.

People into more classical or traditional music might like to try out the selections from Carol Kleyn, a harpist who sings about Silkies, and Van-Anh Vanessa Vo, who plays Vietnamese instruments and sings in a mix of old and new .

Check it out. Let me know which ones you like and why. I’ll be happy to try your recommendations 😉

New Music: Humming House

I just found out about this great new band. It’s cool, I never would have known about them but they stopped by my blog and liked a post of mine. So I went to check them out. I found out they have some stuff online and a few videos on utube and an album out (Live at the Red Clay Theatre). You can go to their website and check them out. Its www.humminghouse.com. Here’s a sample…

Rise —Annabelle Chvostek

Rise — Borealis Records.

I was looking at my Utne Reader that came in my email this morning. I saw this record in a sidebar and decided to check it out. This is where it led me. I listened to a couple of the songs on the link to the utube at the bottom of the page. I think the song “The End of the Road” is interesting, mandolin and percussion put to good use 😉

I didn’t know about either this recording company- Borealis Records, (they look like they have a lot of interesting artists), or Annabelle until I got this email this morning. I didn’t know she used to be with the Wailin’ Jennies (who I really love). This particular album sounds like its really up my alley…

Rise is joyful, anthemic, and unabashedly political, revealing Chvostek’s passion for social justice work and musical activism.  Call it protest music for the indie generation or a soundtrack for the Maple Spring.
